Tanzania Park Fees: TANAPA & Ngorongoro Explained
A practical guide to how TANAPA and Ngorongoro safari fees work, which charges can appear in a quotation, and where to verify official tariffs.

Tanzania safari park fees are not one universal charge. Depending on the itinerary, a quotation can include national park conservation fees, camping or concession-related charges, vehicle fees, Ngorongoro Conservation Area charges, crater access, activity fees and other route-specific costs.
This guide explains the structure of those fees and, more importantly, where to verify them. Government tariffs can change, so Wildlux does not treat an old PDF or a third-party blog post as a permanent price list.
Always confirm fees against the official authority responsible for the protected area and the dates of travel. A published tariff can remain accessible online after its stated validity period has ended.
Who sets safari park fees in Tanzania?
TANAPA — Tanzania National Parks
TANAPA administers Tanzania's national parks, including Serengeti, Tarangire, Lake Manyara, Arusha, Kilimanjaro, Ruaha and Nyerere. Its official tariff page lists park fee information and links to individual park tariffs.
TANAPA's public tariff page currently states that conservation fees are generally valid for 24 hours from entry, that children under five enter free of charge, that child rates apply from ages 5 to 15, and that published fees include 18% VAT where applicable.
NCAA — Ngorongoro Conservation Area Authority
Ngorongoro Conservation Area is managed separately by the Ngorongoro Conservation Area Authority. NCAA's SafariPortal is the official system used to build a visit quote, pay conservation fees and obtain permits.
That separation matters when comparing safari quotations: Ngorongoro is not simply another TANAPA national-park entry. A visit can contain NCAA conservation, vehicle and other applicable charges depending on the route and activity.
What types of fees can appear in a Tanzania safari quotation?
| Fee type | What it covers | Who normally sets it |
|---|---|---|
| Conservation / entry fee | Visitor access to the protected area for the applicable period. | TANAPA or NCAA, depending on the destination. |
| Vehicle-related fee | Charges associated with the safari vehicle entering or operating in the protected area. | Relevant authority. |
| Camping / special campsite fee | Use of public, special, seasonal or fly-camping facilities where applicable. | TANAPA or relevant protected-area authority. |
| Concession-related charge | Can apply to accommodation operating within certain protected areas. | Relevant authority and tariff structure. |
| Crater / special access charge | Route-specific access such as Ngorongoro Crater services where applicable. | NCAA. |
| Activity fee | Walking, night drives or other permitted activities in areas where separate charges apply. | Relevant authority. |
Why fee totals differ between itineraries
Two seven-day safaris can have very different government-fee totals because the route is different. A journey that spends several nights inside Serengeti, descends into Ngorongoro Crater and uses special campsites does not carry the same fee structure as a route based mostly outside protected areas.
The number of adults and children also matters because authorities publish different age and residency categories. The type of accommodation, whether a vehicle crosses multiple protected areas and the number of 24-hour conservation periods can all affect the total.
TANAPA park fees: what to check
The most reliable starting point is TANAPA's official Park Fees & Tariffs page. It links to the tariffs for individual parks and explains the main visitor categories.
- Non-resident: international visitors who do not qualify for resident or East African Community rates.
- Expatriate / resident: travellers who meet the authority's residency-document requirements.
- EAC citizen: qualifying East African Community citizens with the required identification.
- Children: TANAPA currently states that child rates apply from ages 5–15 and children under five enter free of charge.
Do not assume that the same fee applies to every national park. TANAPA publishes park-specific tariffs, and campsite or activity charges can also vary by park and season.
Ngorongoro fees: use the NCAA system
NCAA's current SafariPortal explains that tour operators and individual travellers can build a quote for a visit, see the applicable fees and pay through the official system. Tour operators must hold a valid TALA licence and keep company and vehicle records aligned with ministry records.
For a safari quotation, this means the correct Ngorongoro figure should come from the current NCAA system for the actual travellers, vehicle and activities rather than from a copied flat-rate table.
Why Wildlux does not publish a permanent full fee table
Park tariffs can change by financial year, authority decision, tax treatment or visitor category. Some official tariff documents remain publicly accessible after the period printed on them has expired.
A permanent table would therefore create a risk of showing an outdated amount as current. We prefer to publish the official source, explain the fee structure and use the applicable tariff when preparing your live proposal.
How fees should appear in a good safari quotation
A transparent proposal should make it clear whether the quoted price includes the protected-area fees required by the route. You should be able to see which major destinations and activities are covered and which optional experiences would add another charge.
When comparing operators, ask whether the quotation includes:
- all national park conservation fees for the stated itinerary;
- Ngorongoro Conservation Area fees where applicable;
- crater-related charges if the itinerary includes a crater descent;
- vehicle charges;
- camping, concession or accommodation-related authority fees where applicable;
- special activity permits;
- taxes stated by the authority.

How Wildlux uses park fees in your proposal
When we prepare a Tanzania safari quote, we calculate the protected-area costs for the actual route and party rather than adding one generic “park fee” amount. If a government tariff changes before confirmation and affects your trip, the proposal is updated transparently.
Need a fee breakdown for a specific safari?
Send us the route, dates and number of travellers and we can show how the protected-area charges fit into the wider safari cost alongside accommodation, private transport and other services.
