Start your entry planning with your passport nationality and the order of countries on your itinerary. Where you live, where your flight connects and where you first cross a border can all affect the documents you need. A safari booking does not itself provide permission to enter a country.
East Africa entry requirements at a glance
- Tanzania: check visa exemption, eVisa eligibility and any referral requirements. Zanzibar follows Tanzania immigration rules.
- Kenya: check whether your nationality and circumstances require an approved eTA before departure.
- Uganda: check exemption eligibility or apply through the official electronic immigration system.
- Rwanda: official guidance provides visa on arrival for citizens of all countries, with different fee exemptions and permitted stays.
These are starting points, not a nationality-specific decision. Use the official resources below for the passport you will actually travel on, especially if you hold dual nationality or a non-standard travel document.
Tanzania tourist visas and eVisas
Tanzania's official guidance distinguishes ordinary tourist visas from other categories. US passport holders travelling for tourism are directed to the multiple-entry category. Visa-exempt nationals and people requiring referral clearance have different processes; do not select an application category simply because another traveller used it.
The immigration guidance specifies at least six months of passport validity and at least one unused visa page before application. Check the corresponding arrival requirements for your travel dates too. Prepare clear passport details, your itinerary, accommodation information and onward or return travel documents. Your application must match your passport exactly.
Apply through the official Tanzania eVisa portal. The published application guidance calls for advance submission, with substantially longer lead time for referral cases. Allow extra time to correct uploads or answer questions; an application receipt is not the same as approval.
Can you get a Tanzania visa on arrival?
Visa on arrival is available in eligible circumstances, but it is not a universal option for every nationality or document type. Check with Tanzania Immigration before relying on it. Advance approval can reduce uncertainty, particularly on a route with tightly timed flights, border crossings or onward safari transfers.
Do you need a separate visa for Zanzibar?
Zanzibar is part of Tanzania, so a mainland-to-Zanzibar journey does not normally require a second country's visa. Keep your passport and Tanzania entry documentation accessible for domestic travel checks. Inbound insurance is a separate requirement: see our safari travel insurance guide.
Kenya electronic travel authorisation
Kenya's eTA is permission to travel; admission remains a border decision. The official portal lists exemptions that extend beyond East African partner-state citizens, so avoid the outdated assumption that every foreign visitor needs one. Check the current nationality and traveller-category lists directly.
For travellers who need an eTA, the official guidance recommends applying at least two weeks before travel. Do not plan around the shortest advertised processing time. Save your approval offline and check names, passport number and travel details before departure. Use the official Kenya eTA guidance and application portal.
Check each child individually against the current exemption rules rather than assuming that a parent's approval covers the whole family. A group application process, where available, is not evidence that one approval applies to every traveller.
Uganda tourist visa planning
Uganda's immigration service provides online tourist visa applications. Its published checklist includes a passport bio-data page with at least six months of validity, a photograph, a tour plan, travel itinerary and accommodation details. Applicants should follow the portal's current instructions and retain the approval letter and receipts.
Approval authorisation has a travel-validity window; applying too early can therefore create a different problem from applying too late. Check this against the actual arrival date. Use the official Uganda tourist visa page, which links to the application system.
A gorilla or chimpanzee permit is separate from immigration permission. Match your permit, lodge and transfer arrangements to the approved route, but do not mistake a permit confirmation for a visa. Our gorilla trekking information explains the experience-planning side.
Rwanda visitor entry
Rwanda's immigration authority states that citizens of all countries can obtain a visa on arrival without prior application. Fee exemptions and authorised stays vary by nationality and agreement. Online applications are also available. Check the official Rwanda visa-on-arrival guidance before deciding which route suits you.
Keep accommodation and onward journey details available. Confirm passport validity and entry conditions for your own document with the authority, particularly for emergency passports, residence permits or unusual travel histories. Permission for Rwanda does not automatically settle entry into a neighbouring country.
East Africa Tourist Visa: check the whole route
The regional tourist visa has historically linked Kenya, Uganda and Rwanda; Tanzania is not included. Current official information is not fully aligned: Kenya's eTA eligibility page labels an East African Tourist eTA as “coming soon”, while other regional immigration pages describe an East African Tourist Visa.
Do not assume an older description guarantees acceptance on your planned route. Ask the issuing authority and every country you intend to enter to confirm the document, first-entry conditions, re-entry rules and effect of leaving the participating area. A Tanzania side trip is particularly important to disclose. Until confirmed, plan country-by-country documentation rather than relying on a blanket regional promise.
Passport and family document checklist
- Check expiry dates and blank pages for every traveller, not just the lead guest.
- Use consistent names across flights, permits, insurance and applications.
- Keep offline copies of approvals and a separate secure passport copy.
- Check whether parental consent or relationship documents are required when a child travels with one parent or another adult.
- Tell your planner if you renew a passport after booking; document numbers may need updating.
Border crossings and flights from Zanzibar
A flight from Zanzibar to Kenya, Uganda or Rwanda is international travel. Check entry permission for the destination and any transit formalities on the way. Similarly, crossing a land border during safari does not remove visa requirements.
Build border time into the itinerary and confirm where vehicles or guides change. Keep travel documents in hand luggage rather than in a bag loaded at the bottom of the vehicle. If your route returns to a country already visited, check re-entry explicitly before purchasing a single-entry product.

Can I visit Tanzania and Kenya on one visa?
Do not assume so. Tanzania's permission is separate, and Kenya's eTA or exemption rules must be checked independently.
Should I apply before booking my safari?
Check eligibility first, then coordinate application timing with the documentation and validity window required by the authority. Referral cases need particular care before non-refundable commitments.
Does approval guarantee entry?
No. Carry the supporting documents and comply with the conditions attached to the permission; the immigration authority makes the entry decision.
