Mafia Island
“Tanzania's first marine park, on one of the quieter islands along this coast.”
A low-key island south of Zanzibar with Tanzania's first marine park, seasonal whale sharks, excellent diving and very limited development.
About Mafia Island.
Mafia sits roughly 120 kilometres south of Zanzibar and has almost none of its bustle. Chole Bay, on the eastern side, is enclosed by reef and forms the heart of Mafia Island Marine Park — Tanzania's first, gazetted in 1995 — with coral gardens, walls and channels that make this a highly regarded diving destination in the Indian Ocean.
The seasonal draw is whale sharks. From roughly October to March they feed in the plankton-rich water off Kilindoni on the western side, and snorkelling with them is a well-managed, boat-based activity rather than a free-for-all. Green turtles nest on Juani and Jibondo, and a local conservation programme monitors the nests.
Above water, Mafia is quiet in the most literal sense: a handful of small lodges, coconut plantations, fishing villages and the ruins of Kua on Juani Island, a Shirazi settlement abandoned in the nineteenth century. There is no international airport, no resort strip and very little nightlife. That is the point.
Come here for the sea, for silence, and for a beach extension that feels nothing like a hotel corridor. Do not come expecting Zanzibar's choice of restaurants or its ease of access.
