Tanzania Safari from Zanzibar: How to Plan It Properly
Planning a Tanzania safari from Zanzibar? Compare fly-in and Northern Circuit options, trip length, route order, family pacing and when safari-before-beach works better.

Yes — you can combine Zanzibar with a mainland Tanzania safari, but the best route depends on how many days you have and whether Zanzibar comes before or after the safari.
For most travellers, we prefer safari first and Zanzibar second. The safari is the more structured part of the trip, while the beach works naturally as a slower finish. But if your international flights or wider holiday already place you in Zanzibar first, a safari from Zanzibar can still be planned efficiently.
Do not force a full Northern Circuit into too few days from Zanzibar. For a short safari, use flights and keep the route focused. For a longer safari, build the mainland journey properly and let Zanzibar be the beach extension.
Can you go on safari from Zanzibar?
Yes. Zanzibar can connect to mainland Tanzania by domestic air services, and depending on the confirmed schedule and route, travellers may connect through Arusha or fly toward safari areas directly.
The exact flight, baggage allowance and airstrip depend on the operating airline and itinerary, so these details should be confirmed at booking rather than assumed in advance.
Is it better to safari before or after Zanzibar?
For most first-time travellers, safari first is the cleaner journey.
A safari usually has early starts, road transfers, fixed park-entry logistics and a more active daily rhythm. Zanzibar is easier to use as the final, slower chapter of the holiday.
That said, there are good reasons to begin in Zanzibar:
- your international flight arrives there first;
- you are already staying on the island before deciding to add safari;
- your group wants beach time before a more active mainland journey;
- your flight network makes Zanzibar the most practical starting point.
How many safari days should you add from Zanzibar?
2–3 days: keep it very focused
A very short safari from Zanzibar should not try to cover the entire Northern Circuit. The main objective is to minimise transit and give the available time to one or two strong wildlife areas.
This type of safari works best when the flight schedule supports a practical arrival and departure pattern. It is not the right format for trying to combine Tarangire, Ngorongoro and the Serengeti in a rushed sequence.
4–5 days: enough for a compact mainland safari
With four or five safari days, you have more room to combine two or three areas depending on routing. A carefully planned Tarangire and Ngorongoro combination can work well, or the itinerary can place greater emphasis on the Serengeti if that is the main priority.
The correct choice depends on season and flight logistics.
6–8 days: a proper Northern Tanzania safari
This is where the trip begins to feel like a full safari rather than a short add-on. You can build a balanced route through Tarangire, Ngorongoro and Serengeti with enough time for meaningful wildlife viewing.
Our 7-Day Tanzania Northern Circuit Safari is a useful example of the pacing we prefer.
9–12 days: safari first, Zanzibar as the finish
For a longer holiday, we usually recommend treating the safari as a complete journey in its own right and then adding Zanzibar afterwards.
Our 10-Day Tanzania Signature Safari shows how a slower Northern Circuit can be built before a beach extension.
Best safari routes from Zanzibar
Option 1: Zanzibar + Tarangire + Ngorongoro
This is a practical choice for travellers who want a shorter wildlife trip without committing to the longer distances involved in a full Serengeti circuit.
Tarangire provides baobab landscapes and strong elephant viewing, while Ngorongoro adds the crater and highland environment.
Option 2: Zanzibar + Serengeti-focused safari
If the Serengeti is the main reason for adding safari, it can be better to protect multiple nights there rather than trying to include every northern park.
This approach is especially useful for migration-focused travellers or photographers who want more field time in one productive region.
See the Serengeti National Park guide and our Great Migration Calendar.
Option 3: Full Northern Circuit + Zanzibar
For travellers with enough time, this is the strongest overall combination: Tarangire, Ngorongoro and Serengeti, followed by Zanzibar.
It gives the trip a clear progression from inland wildlife landscapes to the Indian Ocean rather than compressing safari into a side excursion.
Should you fly into the Serengeti?
Flying can make sense when the time saved materially improves the safari. On a short itinerary from Zanzibar, a flight can protect valuable wildlife time that would otherwise be lost to road transfers.
On a longer Northern Circuit, travelling overland through Tarangire and Ngorongoro may create a better journey because each destination contributes to the route.
There is no universal answer. The decision should be based on trip length, season, budget and what you actually want to see.
Should you fly out of the Serengeti to Zanzibar?
This can be a very efficient way to finish a safari when the available flight schedule works for your travel date. Rather than returning overland toward Arusha, the itinerary can use a bush-flight connection as part of the transition to Zanzibar.
Exact routing, baggage limits and connection requirements must be confirmed for the final itinerary.
Our 8-Day Luxury Grumeti Migration & Fly-Out Safari shows why a fly-out ending can protect safari time.
Zanzibar and the Great Migration
If the Great Migration is your priority, design the safari around the migration first and then fit Zanzibar around it.
The best Serengeti region changes through the year, so choosing a beach hotel before deciding the safari routing can create unnecessary flight or transfer complications.
Use our Great Migration Calendar to understand the broad seasonal pattern before fixing the safari section.
Safari from Zanzibar for families
For families, the biggest issue is not whether the trip starts in Zanzibar. It is how many transfers and accommodation changes the children will experience.
A short, focused safari can work very well after beach time, but we would avoid building an itinerary that requires repeated early flights, long drives and one-night stays just to include more destinations.
Private guiding is especially valuable because the day's pace can be adjusted around the family.
Safari from Zanzibar for honeymooners
For honeymooners, we generally prefer safari first and Zanzibar second because the trip becomes progressively more relaxed.
If Zanzibar comes first for flight reasons, the safari can still work beautifully, but we would keep the mainland route elegant and avoid unnecessary backtracking.
Safari from Zanzibar for photographers
Photographers should resist the temptation to build a very short “fly in, tick the box, fly out” safari. If wildlife photography is the main objective, protect enough nights in the relevant safari area and let Zanzibar be secondary to the field time.
See our Safari Photography Seasons guide.
How much does a safari from Zanzibar cost?
There is no single add-on price. Cost depends on:
- number of safari nights;
- domestic flights;
- party size;
- private vehicle arrangements;
- park and conservation fees;
- accommodation level;
- season;
- whether the route returns to Zanzibar or continues elsewhere.
For the main price drivers, read our Tanzania Safari Costs guide.
What luggage should you take?
If the safari uses light aircraft, soft-sided luggage is usually the most practical choice. Exact baggage limits vary by airline, route and aircraft and must be confirmed for the booked flight.
Keep medication, documents, valuables and essential camera equipment in your hand luggage.

Common mistakes when adding safari to Zanzibar
- Trying to see too much in two or three days. Focus beats distance.
- Ignoring flight schedules. The route must work with the actual operating timetable.
- Choosing safari regions before considering the season. This matters especially for the Serengeti.
- Overlooking baggage limits. Beach luggage and bush-flight luggage requirements may differ.
- Adding one-night stops everywhere. More hotels do not automatically mean a better safari.
- Assuming Zanzibar must come first. In many cases, safari first creates the smoother holiday.
Our recommendation
If you have a week or more for safari, build a proper Northern Tanzania journey and finish in Zanzibar.
If you only have two to five safari days from Zanzibar, use flights carefully and keep the route focused around the wildlife experience that matters most to you.
The best itinerary is the one that protects safari time rather than spending the holiday repeatedly moving between airports, lodges and parks.
