“At six in the morning the crater is full of cloud, and then, all at once, it is not.”
There is no substitute for sleeping on the rim. The descent road opens early, and the first vehicles onto the crater floor get the coolest air, the softest light and the lions before the traffic. From a rim lodge that is a short drive; from Karatu it is an hour of it.
The lodge is built along the rim edge in stone and timber, with rooms turned towards the crater and glass that makes the view the primary furnishing. It is cold at this altitude — hence the fireplaces, the hot water bottles and the heavy blankets. Evenings are spent in the lounge watching the light drain out of the caldera.
You leave in the dark with a breakfast box, drop through forest onto the descent road, and reach the floor as the mist lifts off the grass. By the time other vehicles arrive you have already had an hour with lions and the light is still golden. Back up for a late lunch, then the afternoon by the fire with the whole caldera laid out below the window.
